Kalyani Devi Temple, Prayagraj — The Shakti Peeth of Three Fingers

Quick Answer

Kalyani Devi Temple is one of the Shakti Peeths and one of the three great Devi temples of Prayagraj, alongside Alopi Devi at Daraganj and Lalita Devi at Meerapur. Tradition holds that three fingers of Goddess Sati fell here, and the sanctum accordingly holds three deities — Kalyani Devi in the centre, Chinnamasta Devi to her left and Shankar-Parvati to her right. The present temple was built in 1883, but the idols are dated at around 1,500 years old, and the Devi is named in the Padma Purana and the Brahma Vaivarta Purana. Darshan is free, and both Navratris bring fairs.

What Are the Kalyani Devi Temple Timings?

Kalyani Devi opens in two sessions like most Prayagraj temples — roughly 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM — with a break through the middle of the day. Darshan is free and unhurried on ordinary days. During Chaitra and Ashwin Navratri the hours extend considerably and a fair is held, with queues running well outside the temple.

History & Significance

Why Is Kalyani Devi a Shakti Peeth?

What Is Kalyani Devi Temple?

Kalyani Devi Temple is one of the most revered Devi shrines in Prayagraj, dedicated to Maa Kalyani Devi, a form of Goddess Durga. The name carries its own meaning: kalyan is welfare, wellbeing, the good of all — and the Devi is approached for exactly that.

What Fell Here?

When Lord Shiva carried the body of Sati across the world in grief, the places where parts of her fell became Shakti Peethas. At this spot, tradition holds that three fingers of Goddess Sati came to rest — and that is why the sanctum is unusual.

Why Are There Three Deities in the Sanctum?

Because of those three fingers. The temple holds three forms of the Goddess rather than one: Kalyani Devi in the centre, Chinnamasta Devi on her left, and Shankar-Parvati on her right. Most Shakti Peethas hold a single image. Standing before three, formed from three fingers, is the detail that stays with visitors.

How Old Is the Temple?

There are two answers, and both are true. The present temple building was constructed in 1883 — recent, as these things go. But the idols within it have been dated to roughly 1,500 years old. The structure is Victorian-era; what stands inside it is very much older.

Is the Devi Mentioned in the Puranas?

Yes, in two. The Padma Purana refers to her as Lalita Devi, and the Brahma Vaivarta Purana records the story of Maharishi Yagyavalkya, who is said to have consecrated an idol of Kalyani Devi here centuries ago. For a temple that few outside Prayagraj have heard of, that is a deep scriptural footing.

What Are the Three Shakti Peeths of Prayagraj?

This is what most visitors never learn. Prayagraj holds three great Devi shrinesKalyani Devi, Alopi Devi (Alopshankari) at Daraganj and Lalita Devi at Meerapur. Together they make the city a major centre of Shakti worship, and doing all three is the proper way to approach the Devi at Prayag. Almost every visitor does the Sangam and none of the three.

Did you know? Prayagraj is known to the world for the Triveni Sangam, but it is also a significant centre of Shakti worship, with three Devi shrines forming a circuit that takes about half a day and that hardly any visitor is told about.

Your Darshan

How Do You Have Darshan at Kalyani Devi Temple?

A simple neighbourhood darshan with no queue outside Navratri — and one unusual thing to look for.

  1. 1

    Reach the Kalyani Devi Quarter

The temple sits in the locality named after it, in the older part of Prayagraj near Chowk. Autos and e-rickshaws reach it easily.

  2. 2

    Buy Flowers and a Chunri

Stalls outside sell flowers, chunris and prasad — the traditional offerings at a Devi temple.

  3. 3

    Leave Footwear and Enter

Footwear comes off outside. The temple is compact and, on an ordinary day, unhurried.

  4. 4

Look for Three Deities, Not One

This is the detail to notice. Kalyani Devi sits in the centre with Chinnamasta Devi to her left and Shankar-Parvati to her right — three forms, from three fingers.

  5. 5

    Have Darshan of Maa Kalyani

Offer your prayers to the Devi of welfare and wellbeing, at one of the Shakti Peeths of Prayag.

  6. 6

Note the Age of the Idols

The building dates from 1883, but the idols within are held to be some 1,500 years old — worth pausing over.

  7. 7

Ask About the Other Two Shakti Peeths

Alopi Devi at Daraganj and Lalita Devi at Meerapur complete the triad. The priests or your guide can point you onward.

  8. 8

    Continue the Devi Circuit

With a vehicle, all three Shakti Peeths of Prayagraj can be done comfortably in half a day.

When to Go

When Should You Visit Kalyani Devi Temple?

The temple is open all year and free. What shapes the visit is the session timing and the Navratri calendar.

Best Time of Day — Early Morning

Come between 5 and 8 AM for the calmest darshan, before the local devotees arrive and well ahead of the midday closure.

Best Season — October to March

Comfortable weather across Prayagraj for the Devi circuit. November and February are particularly pleasant if you want the three Shakti Peeths without festival crowds.

Most Special — Chaitra & Ashwin Navratri

Both Navratris bring a cultural festival and fair to the temple, drawing devotees from across the country. Ashwin culminates in Vijayadashami. Wonderful, but expect long queues.

Highlights

Why Should You Visit the Devi Temples of Prayagraj?

Everyone comes to Prayagraj for the confluence. Very few know the city is a Shakti centre too.

A Shakti Peeth Hardly Anyone Visits

Pilgrims spend lifetimes seeking out the Shakti Peethas. There is one in the middle of Prayagraj, and almost no visitor is told.

Three Devis in One Sanctum

Kalyani, Chinnamasta and Shankar-Parvati together, formed from three fingers. Most Shakti Peethas hold a single image.

Named in Two Puranas

The Padma Purana and the Brahma Vaivarta Purana both record her, along with the story of Maharishi Yagyavalkya consecrating the idol.

The Three-Peeth Circuit

Kalyani Devi, Alopi Devi and Lalita Devi make a half-day circuit that turns Prayagraj from a confluence stop into a Shakti pilgrimage.

Our family has come to Maa Kalyani for four generations. Everyone in Prayagraj knows her; outsiders come for the Sangam and go home. Very glad someone is finally writing about the Devi temples of our city.

Prayagraj

We did all three Shakti Peeths in one morning with our guide — Kalyani, Alopi and Lalita. Had no idea Prayagraj was a Shakti centre. Completely changed what we thought the city was about.

Visited during Chaitra Navratri. The fair, the crowd, the energy — extraordinary. Go early on those days, the queue was already long by seven in the morning.

Three deities in one sanctum, formed from three fingers of Sati — I have visited many Shakti Peethas and never seen that. The priests explained it patiently. Idols said to be 1500 years old.

Prakash Rao

Hyderabad

Peaceful temple in an old part of the city, well away from the tourist areas. Mind the afternoon closure — we arrived at 2 PM and had to return in the evening. Free entry, no touts.

10:15 AM

Kalyani Devi Temple. The second Peeth — three deities in one sanctum, from three fingers of Sati.

Where to Stay

Where Should You Stay Near Kalyani Devi Temple?

The temple is in the older part of the city, close to the station and to Civil Lines.

Best for comfort

Civil Lines

Prayagraj's main hotel district with branded and mid-range properties and good restaurants, about 15 to 20 minutes from the temple.

Closest to the temple

Near Prayagraj Junction

About 3 km away, convenient if you are arriving or leaving by train, with plenty of budget and mid-range options.

Best for pilgrims

Near the Sangam & Daraganj

Dharamshalas and guesthouses close to the confluence and to Alopi Devi, if the Sangam and the Devi circuit are your focus.

Festival Special

Chaitra & Ashwin Navratri at Kalyani Devi

Both Navratris are the great seasons at Kalyani Devi. A cultural festival and fair is held at the temple during Chaitra Navratri (March or April) and again during Ashwin Navratri (September or October), drawing devotees from across the country and filling the surrounding lanes.

Ashwin Navratri culminates in Vijayadashami, and the whole of Prayagraj observes the season. Queues at the temple begin early on those mornings — arrive at first light, or accept a long wait. Book accommodation ahead, as the city fills up.

Before You Go

What Should You Know Before Visiting Kalyani Devi Temple?

An easy darshan, and one that becomes much more meaningful if you do the full circuit.

Do all three Shakti Peeths together

Kalyani Devi, Alopi Devi at Daraganj and Lalita Devi at Meerapur. Visiting one in isolation misses the point — the three together are the Devi pilgrimage of Prayag.

Mind the afternoon closure

The temple shuts for roughly four hours in the middle of the day. Come in the morning session or after 4 PM.

Look for three deities, not one

Kalyani in the centre, Chinnamasta on her left, Shankar-Parvati on her right — formed from the three fingers of Sati. Easy to miss if nobody tells you.

Navratri means long queues

Both Navratris bring fairs and enormous crowds. Arrive at first light on those mornings.

It is in the older city

The Kalyani Devi quarter has narrow lanes. Autos reach the area but expect a short walk at the end.

Ask about the age of the idols

The temple was built in 1883 but the idols are held to be around 1,500 years old. Standing before something that much older than its own building is worth a moment.

It is a local temple, not a monument

This is where Prayagraj comes to pray. Do not expect the scale of the Sangam sites; the value here is antiquity and significance.

Combine it with a station day

At about 3 km from Prayagraj Junction, it is a practical stop if you have a few hours before a train.

Carry a chunri if you wish to offer one

Chunris, flowers and prasad are sold at the stalls outside, but many devotees prefer to bring their own.

Dress modestly

Standard temple etiquette applies, with footwear removed at the entrance.
