The Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya stays open from 5 am to 9 pm with no midday closure, so early morning around 7 am, before other tour groups arrive, is the best time for a calm visit. Sarnath's Dhamek Stupa and grounds are open 6 am to 6 pm, and Maya Devi Temple in Lumbini follows similar daylight hours, so we plan the Lumbini visit for a full unhurried day rather than a rushed stop.
Phones and cameras are generally allowed at the Buddhist sites on this circuit, but bags are checked at security points near Mahabodhi Temple, Mahaparinirvana Temple in Kushinagar, and at the Sonauli border crossing, so carry only essentials through these checkpoints. A valid passport is required for Indian nationals crossing into Nepal at Sonauli, along with a government-issued photo ID for hotel check-ins on the Indian side.
Modest, comfortable clothing is expected at all temples and monasteries, and footwear must be removed before entering shrine areas, so slip-on shoes save time. Between October and March, mornings in Bodhgaya and Kushinagar are cool enough for a light jacket, while Lumbini can feel similar to the Indian plains, mild by day and cooler after sunset.
This circuit involves genuine travel time, including two long driving days and the Sonauli border crossing, which itself requires standing in immigration queues for three to four hours. For senior citizens, we build extra rest stops into the long drives and keep the pace slower through the border formalities rather than rushing.
Entry to Sarnath, Mahabodhi Temple, Mahaparinirvana Temple, and Maya Devi Temple is free, while any monastery donations in Lumbini's monastic zone are entirely optional. Everything on this Varanasi Bodhgaya Kushinagar Lumbini Tour Package is confirmed to you in writing before travel, and we do not ask for any advance payment.

Founder & Pilgrimage Travel Expert
Uttar Pradesh, India
Amit Kumar Deshwal was born in Uttar Pradesh, and the pilgrimage circuit he now plans for a living is the one he grew up around. What began as showing visitors the temples he already knew has become a full travel operation — but the working knowledge underneath it is still first-hand.
More than 15,000 guests have travelled with him. Families, elderly parents, first-time visitors and large temple groups — enough of them, over enough years, that very little surprises him now. He knows which darshan queue is worth joining at seven in the morning, which one is not, and what to do when a temple changes its timings on a festival day without telling anyone.
His ground is Ayodhya and Varanasi, extending west into the Braj circuit of Mathura, Vrindavan and Agra. That range matters more than it sounds: it is the difference between handing a guest an itinerary and being able to say, from having stood there, how long the walk actually takes.
The reason Ayodhya Varanasi Guides exists is a frustration he heard from guests over and over — a different agent for the cab, another for the hotel, a third for the guide, and nobody accountable when a darshan slot fell through. His answer was to put all of it in one place, under one number, with the pricing written down before anyone travels.
Every itinerary on this site is planned or reviewed by Amit and his team, and corrected whenever conditions on the ground change.

The package runs 7 days and 6 nights, covering Varanasi, Bodhgaya, Kushinagar, and Lumbini in Nepal.
The package starts from ₹19,999 per person, based on double occupancy. Prices vary with hotel category, group size, and season.
The Sonauli border crossing typically takes three to four hours with immigration formalities on both sides, sometimes longer during busy periods.
Indian nationals do not need a visa to enter Nepal. Other nationalities should check Nepal's visa-on-arrival requirements at the Sonauli border before travel.
Around 250 km, taking six to seven hours by road under normal conditions. It can run longer if there is construction near the Bihar border.
Lumbini is Buddha's birthplace. The Maya Devi Temple marks the exact spot, and the Ashoka Pillar nearby, inscribed in the 3rd century BCE, confirms the site historically.
Bodhgaya sightseeing spans an evening walk on Day 3 and the full Mahabodhi Temple visit on Day 4 morning, before the drive to Kushinagar begins the same day.
Kushinagar is where Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana. The Mahaparinirvana Temple houses a 6.1-metre reclining Buddha statue, and the nearby Ramabhar Stupa marks the cremation site.
Yes, it involves several long driving days, including two six-to-seven hour stretches and a border crossing with immigration queues. It suits travelers comfortable with extended road travel.
October to March. Cooler weather makes the long drives and border crossing more comfortable than the summer months.
Essential Information
If a cancellation is made within our free-cancellation window, the full advance amount is refunded to the original payment method. Refunds for eligible cancellations are processed within 7 to 10 working days. Any bank or payment gateway charges deducted at the time of transaction are non-refundable. Since this package spans hotels across two countries, refunds for partially completed tours are calculated based on services already utilised.
Cancellations made 21 days or more before the tour start date are free of charge, with only payment gateway charges deducted. Cancellations between 10 and 20 days before departure attract a 50% cancellation fee, since hotels across Varanasi, Bodhgaya, Kushinagar, and Lumbini are booked well in advance. Cancellations within 9 days of departure, or no-shows, are non-refundable. Date changes, where possible, are treated more flexibly than outright cancellations, so do get in touch with us first.
A booking is confirmed once we receive 25% of the total package cost as advance payment. Once confirmed, we share your hotel vouchers, day-wise itinerary, and guide contact details in writing over email or WhatsApp. The balance payment is collected before the tour start date, as agreed at the time of booking. No booking is held without at least the advance payment, since hotel and vehicle inventory across this multi-country circuit fills up quickly in peak season.
We accept payments via UPI, bank transfer, debit or credit card, and major payment gateways. Bookings require an advance payment to confirm, with the balance due before travel begins, as specified in your booking confirmation. GST is applicable as per government norms and is mentioned separately in your invoice. All payments are acknowledged with a receipt, and no cash payment is required in advance for online bookings.

Travel Plan
Most of the flights/trains arrive in Varanasi by morning, and it doesn’t seem wise to have long tours on the first day, as people still need rest after travel. After check-in and an hour’s rest, we’ll start our tour by exploring Sarnath, located around 10 km and 30-45 minute’s drive from Varanasi, depending on the traffic from the cantonment road. This is the place where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon, and the most prominent site here is the Dhamek Stupa, which is a huge brick-built tower, nearly 44 meters high, around which one can walk from the ground level. What many of my travelers don’t realize is that the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar, a monastery complex near Sarnath, has wonderful 1930s-era Japanese paintings by Kosetsu Nosu, a celebrated Japanese artist. We’ll finish by around 6 pm when the site closes, and overnight in Varanasi.
This is the day we keep aside for Varanasi itself, as it takes one full day to explore the holy city. Those interested can opt for an early morning boat cruise, which can start by around 5:30 am in the river near the bathing ghats. After that, we’ll visit Kashi Vishwanath Temple, which requires a security check and deposit of phones at the counters near Gate 4, which might surprise several of my guests. In the evening, we’ll have a short walk to Dashashwamedh Ghat, where the Ganga Aarti takes place. One should note that on certain occasions, there may be a crowd, and the steps might be inaccessible to some, and in such cases, a rowing boat view of the ceremony can be arranged for an additional cost. We’ll spend our second night in Varanasi as we leave early the next day.
This day’s tour is the longest one in this Varanasi Bodhgaya Kushinagar Lumbini Tour Package, as I have to admit that the distance between Varanasi and Bodhgaya is 250 km, which takes anywhere between 6 to 7 hours to cover on a good road. We leave by around 7 am, with breakfast in between, and if the road conditions allow, we can explore the peripheral areas surrounding the Mahabodhi Temple complex before dinner on the day of arrival. Night stay in Bodhgaya.
We’ll visit the Mahabodhi Temple first thing in the morning around 7 am before heading to Kushinagar, so that we can save plenty of time on the day of our arrival. The Mahabodhi Temple is one of the most revered Buddhist sites and marks the location of the Bodhi tree, under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. Most visitors aren’t aware that the tree inside the temple complex is only a sapling that has been planted later, and the original one has long dried up. By around late morning, we’ll start our journey to Kushinagar, which is another 6-hour drive, so it’s quite a long day covering both the temple visit and the travel time. Night stay in Kushina
We’ll spend the day in Kushinagar, visiting the Mahaparinirvana Temple, a sacred site where Lord Buddha took his last breath. The temple houses a 6.1-meter-long reclining Buddha statue carved out of a single Sandstone and the Ramabhar Stupa, which marks the cremation ground. By the early afternoon, we’ll make our way towards the Nepal border, specifically the Sonauli point, located around 50 km from Kushinagar. We’ll have a long stop here, as it always takes 3-4 hours to complete the formalities on either side, and I never set any false expectations for the immigration process. We’ll reach Lumbini by evening and overnight here.
It’s a relaxed day in Lumbini, which is a perfect end to a long tour. We’ll first visit the Maya Devi Temple, a sacred site marking the birthplace of Lord Buddha, and the Ashoka Pillar, an ancient pillar inscribed by the Mauryan king Ashoka, which also validates the existence of the birthplace. In the morning, we’ll also visit the Sacred Garden and the Puskarini Pond, believed to have been the place where Buddha’s mother took a bath. In the afternoon, we can explore the monastic region, where several nations have built their separate stupas in their respective styles. Overnight in Lumbini.
We will cross back into India from Sonauli and head to Gorakhpur for our onward journey. This day, again, is not for exploring as we need to complete the immigration procedures, which, once again, can take a minimum of 3-4 hours. This tour is highly traveling-intensive, where a guest has to spend more time in transit than exploring any given site, as I’ve mentioned in this Varanasi Bodhgaya Kushinagar Lumbini tour guide itinerary.
