Kashi Vishwanath Temple opens early, around 3 am for Mangala Aarti, but for this itinerary we aim for the afternoon slot, usually 2 pm to 4 pm, when the morning rush has thinned out. The temple closes briefly around midday for cleaning and ritual changes, so we plan our arrival just after it reopens rather than waiting in a static queue. The Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya stays open from 5 am to 9 pm with no midday closure, so early morning around 7 am is the best time for a calm visit there.
Phones, cameras, bags, and any leather items are not allowed inside Kashi Vishwanath Temple and must be deposited at the counters near Gate 4 before security screening. Bags are also checked at Mahabodhi Temple's entrance, so carry only essentials through the gates. A government-issued photo ID is useful throughout the trip, especially at hotel check-ins and temple checkpoints.
Modest clothing is expected at all temples, shoulders and knees covered, and footwear must be removed before entering, so slip-on shoes save time in queues. Between October and March, mornings on the Varanasi ghats are cool enough to need a light jacket, while Bodhgaya stays comfortably mild through the day.
There's a fair amount of walking on this trip, including narrow lanes near the ghats, steps down to the river for the boat ride, and the clockwise path around the Mahabodhi Temple complex in Bodhgaya. For senior citizens or anyone with mobility concerns, we arrange the vehicle to wait closer to entry points where permitted and build in slower pacing rather than rushing between sites.
Entry to Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Sarnath, and the Mahabodhi Temple is free, while the Sarnath Museum has a separate paid ticket and any private darshan or monastery donation is entirely optional. Everything on this Buddhist Circuit Tour Package Varanasi Sarnath Bodhgaya is confirmed to you in writing before travel, and we do not ask for any advance payment.

Founder & Pilgrimage Travel Expert
Uttar Pradesh, India
Amit Kumar Deshwal was born in Uttar Pradesh, and the pilgrimage circuit he now plans for a living is the one he grew up around. What began as showing visitors the temples he already knew has become a full travel operation — but the working knowledge underneath it is still first-hand.
More than 15,000 guests have travelled with him. Families, elderly parents, first-time visitors and large temple groups — enough of them, over enough years, that very little surprises him now. He knows which darshan queue is worth joining at seven in the morning, which one is not, and what to do when a temple changes its timings on a festival day without telling anyone.
His ground is Ayodhya and Varanasi, extending west into the Braj circuit of Mathura, Vrindavan and Agra. That range matters more than it sounds: it is the difference between handing a guest an itinerary and being able to say, from having stood there, how long the walk actually takes.
The reason Ayodhya Varanasi Guides exists is a frustration he heard from guests over and over — a different agent for the cab, another for the hotel, a third for the guide, and nobody accountable when a darshan slot fell through. His answer was to put all of it in one place, under one number, with the pricing written down before anyone travels.
Every itinerary on this site is planned or reviewed by Amit and his team, and corrected whenever conditions on the ground change.

The package runs 5 days and 4 nights, covering Varanasi, Sarnath, and Bodhgaya.
The package starts from ₹12,999 per person, based on double occupancy. Prices vary with hotel category, group size, and season.
Sarnath is about 10 km from central Varanasi. The drive takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic through the cantonment area.
Around 250 km, taking six to seven hours by road under normal conditions. It can run longer if there is construction near the Bihar border.
Sarnath is where Buddha delivered his first sermon, and Bodhgaya is where he attained enlightenment. Visiting in this order follows the actual sequence of events rather than being rearranged for convenience.
The Mahabodhi Temple marks the spot where Buddha attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree. Visitors walk clockwise around the complex, following traditional practice.
Yes. Phones and leather items must be deposited at counters near Gate 4 before security screening. This is mandatory and often surprises first-time visitors.
It's a long final day, six to seven hours with little sightseeing. Flights or trains are best scheduled for late evening to allow a buffer for road delays.
Yes, especially in peak season, with the steps packed shoulder to shoulder. A rowboat viewing option is available at extra cost for a less crowded experience.
October to March. Mornings are cool enough for sightseeing and the long drives are more comfortable without the summer heat.
Essential Information
If a cancellation is made within our free-cancellation window, the full advance amount is refunded to the original payment method. Refunds for eligible cancellations are processed within 7 to 10 working days. Any bank or payment gateway charges deducted at the time of transaction are non-refundable. Since this package spans hotels in two cities, refunds for partially completed tours are calculated based on services already utilised.
Cancellations made 18 days or more before the tour start date are free of charge, with only payment gateway charges deducted. Cancellations between 8 and 17 days before departure attract a 50% cancellation fee, since hotels in both Varanasi and Bodhgaya are booked in advance. Cancellations within 7 days of departure, or no-shows, are non-refundable. Date changes, where possible, are treated more flexibly than outright cancellations, so do get in touch with us first.
A booking is confirmed once we receive 25% of the total package cost as advance payment. Once confirmed, we share your hotel vouchers, day-wise itinerary, and guide contact details in writing over email or WhatsApp. The balance payment is collected before the tour start date, as agreed at the time of booking. No booking is held without at least the advance payment, since hotel and vehicle inventory across Varanasi and Bodhgaya fills up quickly in peak season.
We accept payments via UPI, bank transfer, debit or credit card, and major payment gateways. Bookings require an advance payment to confirm, with the balance due before travel begins, as specified in your booking confirmation. GST is applicable as per government norms and is mentioned separately in your invoice. All payments are acknowledged with a receipt, and no cash payment is required in advance for online bookings.

Travel Plan
Most flights and trains tend to arrive in the late morning, and I never schedule an arrival on a weekday without setting aside the whole day for recovery. Not only is it exhausting to travel, but Sarnath is also quite far, and I always leave it for the afternoon when I know people are more well-rested. You should have plenty of time to explore this important archaeological site on the banks of the river, including its most famous monument - the Dhamek Stupa. It’s a massive brick structure that rises some 44 m into the air and surrounds the traditional brick-and-tile pagoda, a temple complex with a rich history dating back to the Mauryan period. Many westerners I meet on this tour are surprised to hear that it includes Mulagandha Kuti Vihar with its’ remarkably preserved early 20th century Japanese frescoes by artist Kosetsu Nosu, the inside walls of which are decorated with traditional Japanese motifs. We’ll spend the day capped off at Deer Park, which I recommend leaving before 6 pm because it closes promptly at that time. Overnight in Varanasi at a hotel convenient to the ghats.
This is the day I always make sure is focused on Varanasi itself, and not the surrounding region. This tour has very few extra attractions, and the few exceptions are reserved for those who wish to partake in an optional sunrise boat ride (around 5:30 am). A visit to Kashi Vishwanath Temple is a must, but I always recommend being prepared for security checks as you enter through gate 4 - many of my clients have found it helpful to arrive on foot with a phone deposit and a cleared bag. In the evening we can see the Ganga Aarti, a spectacular ritual held on the bank of the river that involves millions of tiny burning lamps across dozens of ghats - the best view from Dashashwamedh Ghat, although the steps there should be avoided if this is your first time or you are traveling with children. If you want to avoid the crowds altogether, you can see the show from inside a boat for an additional fee. Second night in Varanasi.
This day is always my favorite because of how surprising the change of pace can be. Varanasi to Bodhgaya is a six to seven hour drive, although construction on the road near the Bihar border often adds several more, and I always advise leaving after breakfast at around 7 am not expecting to arrive before noon. This town has a markedly more relaxed pace than what I find in Varanasi, and if the road conditions permit I’ll suggest walking the perimeter of the Mahabodhi Temple complex before dinner on the day of our arrival if there is still daylight. Overnight in Bodhgaya, right next to the temple complex.
I always try to visit the Mahabodhi Temple early in the morning, before 7 am, while still having enough daylight to see the complex. The most notable feature of this temple is, of course, the Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, but few of my clients are aware that it was actually planted later in the lineage - the monks at the temple complex are always happy to tell you the story. On this day, I usually give you some free time in the afternoon to visit places of your choice or suggest visiting the neighboring Thai, Tibetan, and Bhutanese monasteries, each of which has a unique architectural style. Second night in Bodhgaya.
We’ll leave Bodhgaya at around 7 am for another six to seven hour drive to Varanasi, meaning I suggest planning your flights or trains for later in the evening. Most of my clients find that there are very few sights to see during this leg of the trip, and I always tell them so outright - I think it’s important not to waste time pretending that day five isn’t mostly a return journey. You should also have a couple of hours to relax during your stay in Varanasi before the transfer to the airport or bus station. And this concludes my Buddhist Circuit Tour Package Varanasi Sarnath Bodhgaya - 5 Days Itinerary, which involves two states and two major road trips.
