Ready for your Ayodhya Varanasi Yatra?
Let us design the perfect pilgrimage package for you.
Ayodhya is one of India's most sacred pilgrimage cities, known for its historic temples and the deep spiritual pull it has on anyone who visits. This guide covers everything you need for Ayodhya's temple timings and locations — Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir, Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan, Dashrath Mahal, Nageshwarnath Temple, and the other stops most pilgrims want to cover — along with opening hours, distances between them, and the kind of practical, ground-level tips that actually make the visit easier.
I am PV Srinivas from Ayodhya Varanasi Guides, and I meet pilgrims at the station here every week. What follows is more or less what I tell them in person — which temple to start with, how far things really are from each other, how to move between them, and how to avoid the small mistakes that end up costing people time.
Ayodhya Temple Map and Locations
Ayodhya's main temples sit close together, so most visitors can cover the core circuit without long transfers between stops. The Ramkot zone is comfortably walkable, while spots further out, like Guptar Ghat, are better reached by taxi or auto.
Temple | Latitude & Longitude | Locality | Nearby Landmarks | Distance from Ayodhya Dham Jn. | Distance from Ram Mandir | Walking Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir | 26.7956, 82.1943 | Ramkot | Brahma Kund, Ram Path | ~1.5 km | 0 km | 15–20 mins |
Hanuman Garhi | 26.7958, 82.2001 | Ramkot | Hanuman Garhi Chauraha | ~1.5 km | ~500 m | 5–7 mins |
Kanak Bhawan | 26.7972, 82.2015 | North-East Ramkot | Kanak Bhawan Lane | ~1.8 km | ~700 m | 8–10 mins |
Dashrath Mahal | 26.7965, 82.1985 | Ramkot Lane | Badi Jagah Gate | ~2.0 km | ~500 m | 6–8 mins |
Nageshwarnath Temple | 26.8045, 82.2052 | Swarg Dwar | Ram Ki Paidi, Saryu Bank | ~2.2 km | ~1.5 km | 15–20 mins |
Ram Ki Paidi | 26.8028, 82.2060 | Riverfront | Saryu promenade | ~2.2 km | ~1.5 km | 15–20 mins |
Guptar Ghat | 26.7760, 82.1085 | Cantt side | Saryu bank | ~10.5 km | ~9.0 km | Taxi only |
The simplest way to use this map is to split your day into two blocks — Ramkot first, then the riverfront afterward. It cuts down on backtracking and keeps the walking manageable.
Distance Between Major Temples
These are the distances that actually matter for planning a same-day darshan. Ram Mandir, Hanuman Garhi, Dashrath Mahal, and Kanak Bhawan sit close enough to walk between, while Ram Ki Paidi is best saved for after the core temple circuit.
From | To | Distance | Walking Time | Auto Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Ram Mandir | Hanuman Garhi | ~500 m | 5–7 mins | 2–3 mins |
Ram Mandir | Kanak Bhawan | ~700 m | 8–10 mins | 3–4 mins |
Ram Mandir | Dashrath Mahal | ~500 m | 6–8 mins | 2–3 mins |
Ram Mandir | Ram Ki Paidi | ~1.5 km | 15–20 mins | 6–8 mins |
Most pilgrims can comfortably walk between these if the weather cooperates. In summer, though, an e-rickshaw is usually the smarter call.
How to Reach Every Temple in Ayodhya
Where you're starting from matters more than people expect. For most visitors, the railway station, airport, or bus stand is really just the starting point before switching to walking, an e-rickshaw, or a taxi inside the city itself.
Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir: From the station, take an e-rickshaw or taxi into Ramkot and walk the last stretch to the entry gate. From the airport, a taxi to the Ram Path or Brahma Kund area works well. From the bus stand, an auto or e-rickshaw to the Ramkot barricade gets you close. Walking suits anyone staying nearby, while a taxi is generally the easiest option for families.
Hanuman Garhi: An e-rickshaw from the station straight to Hanuman Garhi Chauraha is the quickest route. From the airport, take a taxi into Ramkot. It's an easy walk from both Ram Mandir and Dashrath Mahal, so most people just cover it on foot as part of the same loop.
Kanak Bhawan: From the station, an e-rickshaw to Tulsi Nagar or Ramkot gets you close. It's an easy walk from Hanuman Garhi, and an auto is genuinely useful here on hot afternoons.
Dashrath Mahal: An e-rickshaw to Ramkot Lane from the station works fine, and it's a short, easy walk from either Hanuman Garhi or Ram Mandir — a natural stop to fold into the same loop rather than a separate trip.
Ram Ki Paidi in Ayodhya and Nageshwarnath Temple in Ayodhya: From the station or airport, a taxi to the riverfront is the simplest option, especially after sunset or if you're travelling with elderly family members. Walking is possible from Ram Mandir if the weather is on your side.
Guptar Ghat: This one's far enough out that a taxi is really your best bet from any starting point — walking isn't practical here for most visitors.
Nearby Attractions
Most of Ayodhya's temples sit close to other pilgrimage points, so it's easy to fold more than one stop into a single outing. Ramkot is by far the most connected zone, while the riverfront temples naturally pair with the ghats.
Temple | Nearby Places |
|---|---|
Ram Mandir | Hanuman Garhi, Dashrath Mahal, Kanak Bhawan |
Hanuman Garhi | Dashrath Mahal, Kanak Bhawan, Sita Ki Rasoi |
Ram Ki Paidi | Nageshwarnath, Saryu Ghat, Lakshman Ghat |
Nageshwarnath | Ram Ki Paidi, Saryu Ghat |
Guptar Ghat | Riverfront promenade, outer Saryu bank |
The practical upshot is that you rarely need a separate trip for every single shrine — many of them fall along the same walking corridor.
Nearby Hotels
Where you stay in Ayodhya really comes down to budget and how close you want to be to Ram Mandir. If an easier darshan schedule matters to you, a hotel in Ramkot or the central belt nearby is the better choice.
Hotel Type | Distance from Ram Mandir | Category |
|---|---|---|
Budget | 0.9–2.5 km | Budget |
Mid-range | 0.9–1.5 km | Mid-range |
Luxury | 3–6 km | Luxury |
Dharamshala | 0.5–1.2 km | Dharamshala |

Nearby Restaurants
Ayodhya is largely a vegetarian pilgrimage city, so most eateries here are pure veg or family-friendly. The best food options cluster around Ram Path, Naya Ghat, and the temple corridors.
Food Type | Distance from Ram Mandir |
|---|---|
Pure Veg | 0.5–2 km |
Family restaurants | 0.8–2.5 km |
Breakfast spots | 0.5–1.5 km |
Lunch restaurants | 1–3 km |
Dinner restaurants | 1–3 km |
Breakfast is usually easiest on the Ramkot side, while lunch and dinner options open up a bit more once you move toward the city corridor.
Temple Entry Fee
Most of Ayodhya's major temples don't charge an entry fee at all, though Ram Mandir's aarti and any special access still run through the official trust system. Keep in mind that pass rules can shift around festival dates.
Temple | Entry Fee | VIP | Aarti Pass |
|---|---|---|---|
Ram Mandir | Free | No paid VIP tickets | Required for special aarti |
Hanuman Garhi | Free | No | No |
Kanak Bhawan | Free | No | No |
Dashrath Mahal | Free | No | No |
Nageshwarnath | Free | No | No |
Photography and Mobile Rules
Ram Mandir has by far the strictest rules of the group, while the other temples are more relaxed in their outer courtyards. If you'd rather not deal with delays at the gate, keep your phone tucked away before you enter the main security zone.
Temple | Mobile | Camera | Drone |
|---|---|---|---|
Ram Mandir | No | No | No |
Hanuman Garhi | Limited | Restricted | No |
Kanak Bhawan | Yes in courtyard | Restricted | No |
Dashrath Mahal | Yes in courtyard | Restricted | No |
Nageshwarnath | Yes | Restricted inside | No |
Wheelchair and Senior Citizen Facilities
Accessibility is strongest at Ram Mandir, and it's also fairly manageable at flat courtyard temples like Kanak Bhawan and Dashrath Mahal. Hanuman Garhi is the toughest of the group simply because of its 76 steps.
Temple | Wheelchair | Ramp | Steps |
|---|---|---|---|
Ram Mandir | Yes | Yes | No major barrier |
Hanuman Garhi | No | No | 76 steps |
Kanak Bhawan | Yes | Limited | Few steps |
Dashrath Mahal | Yes | Limited | Few steps |
Nageshwarnath | Limited | Limited | Narrow access |
Parking Information
Parking is tightly controlled in the core zone, so most visitors leave their vehicle outside and continue by e-rickshaw or on foot. Ram Path and Brahma Kund are the two most common parking access points.
Parking Area | Charges | Walking Distance |
|---|---|---|
Ram Path Parking | Moderate | 5–15 mins |
Brahma Kund Parking | Moderate | 5–10 mins |
Bus Parking | Low to moderate | 10–20 mins |
Car Parking | Moderate to high | 10–20 mins |
Two-Wheeler Parking | Low | 5–15 mins |
If you're arriving by private vehicle, park on the outer edge and finish the last stretch by e-rickshaw or on foot — it's genuinely the easiest way to handle the inner Ramkot zone.
Best Time to Visit Each Temple
Different temples feel better at different times of day, so it helps to think about timing temple by temple rather than just picking a season. Early morning suits the main shrines best, while evening belongs to the ghats.
Temple | Best Month | Best Time |
|---|---|---|
Ram Mandir | Oct–Mar | 7:00 AM–8:30 AM |
Hanuman Garhi | Oct–Mar | 6:00 AM–7:30 AM |
Kanak Bhawan | Oct–Mar | 8:00 AM or 4:30 PM |
Dashrath Mahal | Oct–Mar | 8:00 AM–9:00 AM |
Ram Ki Paidi | Oct–Mar | 5:30 PM–7:30 PM |
If evening aarti is high on your list, our Saryu Ghat Aarti Timings guide covers that ceremony in more detail.
Temple-wise Travel Tips
A few small habits, specific to each temple, save a surprising amount of time:
- Ram Mandir: Get there before 7 AM, deposit your phone in a locker beforehand, and wear footwear you can slip off easily.
- Hanuman Garhi: Watch out for the monkeys, be ready to climb 76 steps, and visit before Ram Mandir if you can.
- Kanak Bhawan: Best visited right after Hanuman Garhi, either in the morning or in the evening.
- Dashrath Mahal: A short stop, easy to combine with your Ram Mandir visit.
- Ram Ki Paidi: Save this one for the evening, and give yourself time to actually sit through the aarti rather than rushing past.
Festivals Celebrated
Festival days bring bigger crowds, but they also create the most memorable atmosphere at each site. If you're planning around a festival, expect longer queues and build in extra time.
Temple | Main Festival |
|---|---|
Ram Mandir | Ram Navami |
Hanuman Garhi | Hanuman Jayanti |
Nageshwarnath | Mahashivratri |
Kanak Bhawan | Janaki Navami |
Ram Ki Paidi | Deepotsav / Diwali |
Nearby Ghats
Ayodhya's ghats are a big part of the experience, particularly in the evening. They're best enjoyed after the temple circuit is done, once the light softens and the pace of the day slows down.
Ghat | Distance | Timings | Best Time | Aarti |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Ram Ki Paidi | ~1.5 km | Evening-oriented | 5:30 PM–7:30 PM | Saryu Aarti |
Guptar Ghat | ~9.0 km | Daylight to evening | Sunset | Limited seasonal activity |
Naya Ghat | ~2.2 km | All day | Morning/evening | River rituals |
Lakshman Ghat | Varies | Daytime/evening | Evening | Seasonal |
Saryu Ghat | ~2 km area | Evening | Sunset | Yes |
Temple Facilities
Facilities are strongest at the newer, better-managed sites, especially Ram Mandir and the main riverfront zones. Carry a water bottle only if it's allowed inside the temple zone, and be ready for queues at the busier spots.
Temple | Washroom | Drinking Water | Locker | Shoe Stand | Wheelchair |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Ram Mandir | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Hanuman Garhi | Limited | Yes | Private | Yes | No |
Kanak Bhawan | Yes | Yes | Limited | Yes | Yes |
Dashrath Mahal | Limited | Yes | Limited | Yes | Yes |
Ram Ki Paidi | Yes | Yes | No | Yes | Limited |
Two-Day Ayodhya Temple Itinerary
A two-day plan works better if you'd rather move at a slower pace or want to fit in some of the outer sites too.
Day 1: Ramkot temples — Ram Mandir, Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan, Dashrath Mahal, Ram Ki Paidi.Day 2: Guptar Ghat, Mani Parvat, Tulsi Smarak Bhawan, Bharat Kund.
Temple History
Ayodhya's temples carry layers of mythology, royal patronage, and local tradition. Ram Mandir is the modern centrepiece, while the older shrines tie the city back to its epic and historical memory.
Temple | Construction | Mythology | Historical Importance | Architecture | Interesting Fact |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Ram Mandir | New trust-managed structure | Birthplace of Ram | Central pilgrimage site | Traditional Nagara | Built for long-term durability |
Hanuman Garhi | Fort-shrine tradition | Hanuman as guardian | Major guardian temple | Fort style | 76 steps to reach the shrine |
Kanak Bhawan | Royal temple tradition | Gift to Sita-Ram | One of Ayodhya's best-known temples | Palace style | Beautiful courtyard worship space |
Dashrath Mahal | Reconstructed shrine | King Dashrath's palace | Links to the royal Ayodhya memory | Palace-style temple | Known locally as Badi Jagah |
Nageshwarnath | Ancient shrine | Linked to Kush | Major Shiva temple in Ayodhya | Traditional temple form | Important for Maha Shivratri |
Visitor Tips
Winter is the best season overall, and a non-festival weekday morning is usually your calmest window. Crowds rise sharply on weekends and around major Hindu festivals, especially at Ram Mandir and Hanuman Garhi.
Dress modestly, keep phones and cameras out of restricted zones, and use lockers wherever they're offered. Carry drinking water, wear comfortable footwear, and be ready for the heat if you're visiting between April and June. If you're travelling with elderly family, early-morning darshan and short e-rickshaw transfers work better than long walks between stops.

Conclusion
Ayodhya's temple circuit is compact, well connected, and easy to cover once you group the shrines by area. Start at Hanuman Garhi in Ayodhya, move through the rest of the Ramkot temples — including Kanak Bhawan in Ayodhya and Dashrath Mahal in Ayodhya — and finish at the riverfront for the most balanced spiritual itinerary.
